When should an asphalt sealer be applied?

New asphalt should cure a minimum of 30 to 60 days. Once the asphalt is free from oils and sufficiently cured, you can apply the sealer.

At what temperatures should seal coat be applied?

Spring and Fall: Upon seal coat application, it must be a minimum of 50 degrees and rising for a 24-hour period.

Summer: If you intend to seal coat asphalt at temperatures of over 85 degrees, contact a SealMaster® representative for proper precautionary measures.

Are there any other weather requirements for sealcoating?

You should not apply sealcoating if rain is imminent within a 24-hour period. High humidity (over 75%) also increases the time needed for the sealer to dry prior to opening up to traffic.

How long should we keep vehicles off of the surface after sealing?

We recommend letting seal coating set for a minimum of 24 hours before opening up your pavement to traffic.  This gives the seal coat plenty of time to dry and cure properly for maximum wearability.

How should the asphalt be prepared before sealcoating?

Surfaces must be clean and free from all loose dirt and material. Pavement surfaces should be repaired with a suitable hot or cold asphalt mix. Cracks should be filled with SealMaster® hot or cold applied crack fillers. Treat all gas, oil or grease spots with SealMaster® PetroSeal™ or PrepSeal™.  For smooth asphalt, or polished aggregates, SealMaster® has a wide variety of primers available to help your sealcoating investment stick to the pavement.

How is asphalt sealer applied?

Pavement sealer can be applied by brush, squeegee, or specialized spray equipment. Equipment shall be capable of spraying sealer with sand added.

What are the coverage rates for SealMaster® sealer?

Coverage rates will vary based on the product. Follow the specification sheet for application rates. Apply two coats of sealer. A third coat may be applied to high traffic areas such as entrances, exits and drive lanes.

What are the benefits to using additives in sealer?

Additives can assist in speeding up the dry time for additional coats of sealer, as well as help with sand suspension while reducing power steering marks.

Is sand required for application?

Yes. Clean silica sand should be included in the mix design. Sand provides slip resistance, helps with drying, and adds to the durability of the sealcoating material.

Are SealMaster® products safe for anyone to use?

SealMaster® offers water-based asphalt products and acrylic products that are environmentally and user-friendly.  Our fumes are non-toxic, so you never have to be concerned.
